Multifuel Stoves

Shropshire Building Supplies are pleased to offer a suberb choice of cast iron multifuel stoves from the Percy Doughty & Co Range.

Let us help you find the best woodburning or multifuel stove for your needs.

Firstly let us explain the difference between a wood burning as opposed to a multifuel stove. A woodburning stove has a grate which is static with no moving parts. Wood burns far more efficiently on a flat bed of ash – hence it does not require so much cleaning or removal of ash. A multifuel stove has a “Riddling Grate” which is for use of coal or wood. When buring coal you need to clear some of the ash in order for it to continue burning efficiently and the riddling grate allows the ash to fall through to the ash pan, which is always found in the multifuel stoves.

A woodburning stove is better than an open fire as a pound of fuel will produce 3 times more heat when burned in a stove than on an open fireplace. An open fire will feed off the warm air from the room so all the heat produced by an evening fire is lost because the the open fire is drawing in massive amounts of air from the room and will also feed off other heat sources such as night storage heaters or radiators and send it straight up the chimney. When this is taken into account we can expect something like 8 times more heat from a stove than an open fire.

In many cases a room heating stove can go a long way to heating a whole cottage , or take a load off an existing central heating system in a sizeable house.
