Timber Sheet Materials

Timber sheet materials are the product of solid timber and/or recycled timber which are glued together. The most widely used/known are plywood, OSB (Oriented Strand Board), hardboard, chipboard and MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) . They are used in different grades dependent on the constructural use – and using the correct grading is essential to comply with Building Regulations and Construction Products Regulations. Also buying products with CE marks on the sheet materials will ensure they comply with BS EN 13986. At Shropshire Building Supplies we offer a sheet cutting service so that your order can be finished to exactly the right size saving time and inconvenience at home or on site.

OSB

What is OSB?

OSB is a wood based panel that’s been engineered to work for you.

It’s easy to use and superior in many cases to Plywood, particularly when the Ply doesn’t carry the correct certified credentials. It’s less expensive than many Ply equivalents too.

OSB stands for Oriented Strand Board. Super strong, consistent and defect free, it’s made with three layers of wood strands that are mixed with resin, each layer is laid in opposite directions for extra strength .

So whether you’re sheathing walls, laying floors, cladding roofs, fitting out van interiors or anything else, you’ll get better results, better efficiency and better value.

This is an exterior grade panel and is made to very strict manufacturing tolerances, is easy to cut and can be painted to give a durable and aesthetically pleasing finish.

Sizes available ex stock:

OSB2 (Standard)

2440mm x 1220mm x 8mm, 11mm

OSB3 (Conditioned)

24440mm x 1220mm x 18mm & 2400mm x 1200mm x 9mm

Hardboard

This is made from wood fibre taken from chips or pulped wood waste. Hardboard is commonly used as a floor covering, but can also be used in a range of panelling and cladding applications. As with OSB it is easy to cut, and can be painted. The pegboard version has a set of uniform holes drilled into it for use as peg type backing board for panneling and display purposes.

Sizes available ex stock:

Standard; 2440mm x 1220mm x 3.2mm

Pegboard; 2440mm x 1220mm x 3.25mm

MDF

This is knot free and made from wood fibres with no surface grain and is stiff, yet easily cut, drilled and filled. It has a uniformly dense core to make it suitable for moulding. it can also be painted, laminated and veneered. It comes in a range of grades such as Standard, Deep Router, Light, Heavy, Moisture Resistant, Thin (high density), Veneer Faced, Melomine Faced, Flame Retardent, Bendy, Perforated most of which are available in a huge range of sheet sizes and varying thickness!

Sizes available ex stock:

Standard Grade; 2440mm x 1220mm x 6mm

Moisture Resistant Grade; 2440mm x 1220mm x 9mm, 12mm, 18mm, 25mm

Veneered Grade; 2440mm x 1220mm x 18mm in Pine, Oak, Beech and White Ash

Chipboard

Chipboard is generally available in Standard Grade, which is normally about 650kg/m3 density, and Flooring Grade which is about 720kg/ m3 density. Standard grade is widely used in furniture manufacturing and general joinery, particularly where the boards will be “hidden” under a veneer or laminate. Flooring grade is produced as a square-edged panel but is also available with a tongued and grooved profile. Flooring Grades are classed as either P4 (for interior use only) or P5 which can be used where moisture resistance is required e.g. bathroom floors. We also stock a product from Egger (click on name for more info) called Protect, which has a resin impreganted paper on both sides of the board whcih can be exposed to the elemnts for up to 42 days during the building process!!

Sizes available ex stock:

Egger P5 Flooring Grade T&G; 2400mm x 600mm x 18mm, 22mm

Egger Protect; 2400mm x 600mm x 22mm

Std Grade; 2440mm x 1220mm x 12mm, 18mm
